Elizabeth School Board Member Nabbed for DWI in NJ

May 25, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

A member of the Elizabeth School Board, who also serves as a firefighter in the community, has been charged with DWI after crashing into another vehicle at an intersection in Linden on October 15, according to NJ.com.

The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m., when Daniel Nina attempted to turn left from Route 1 North onto South Park Avenue.

His Kia struck a Chevy that was driving south on Route 1, causing minor injuries to the 56-year-old Chevy driver. Nina, 40, was also charged with careless driving.

Through his lawyer, Nina has strenuously denied driving drunk, with attorney Edward Kologi telling the press, “We will vigorously defend any allegations of inappropriate or unlawful conduct by Mr. Nina.”

It makes sense that he’d fight hard – public servants, be they elected officials or first responders- are generally held to a different standard in the public’s mind.

Nina joined the Elizabeth School Board in January of 2016, and was backed by major figures in the local political establishment.

As a firefighter, Nina has been recognized for bravery by the Fireman’s Mutual Benevolent Association.

According to a spokeswoman for the City of Elizabeth, the city will “deal with any discipline after the legal process is completed.”

NJ Cop Drives Drunk, Pulls Gun on Driver, Robs Him

May 10, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

Franklin Township, in Somerset County, may need to take a look at its procedures when it comes to hiring and retaining police officers.

Sergeant Teddy Cerra, 42, might have seemed like a good pick when he joined the department.

He has a history in law enforcement, having served as a special agent with the United States Secret Service, and has certifications as a paramedic and firefighter.

He also run a business, Division Security Consultants, that sells firearms and conducts training for police and other first responders.

His business – and his career in law enforcement – may face some trouble in the near term. According to New Jersey State Police, on November 1, Cerra was allegedly driving drunk when another driver took offense at his erratic driving.

Cerra pulled a gun on the man and then took his wallet. The man jumped back into his vehicle and tried to flee.

Cerra followed, smashing into several other vehicles before the incident was concluded by the arrival of State Troopers.

Cerra was arrested and has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, DWI, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Alcohol can make people behave strangely.

If you’ve been arrested for DWI in New Jersey, it’s likely you’re facing other charges too, from moving violations to, in Cerra’s case, violent felonies.

Hackettstown Woman Grabs DWI After Stumbling Into Convenience Store

March 2, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

New Jersey Drunk Driving Charges Defense Lawyer

For one Hackettstown woman, the choice to stagger into a convenience store at 2:20am for some snacks- and several that preceded it – have led to a string of charges.

According to police, Stella Pastucci, 47, pulled into the Quick Chek on Route 182 just after 2:00 in the morning, striking a pole with her vehicle as she did so.

She then stumbled into the store, where staff alerted police to the accident outside and that the driver was inside.

When an officer arrived, he spoke to Pastucci and noted that she had a strong odor of alcohol about her.

Though she was not in her car at the time of her interaction with the officer, she was arrested and charged with DWI, careless driving, DWI in a school zone, and refusal.

She was later released, pending a court appearance.

NJ Cop Wanted in PA After Failure to Appear for DUI Trial

February 7, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

Experienced New Jersey DUI Attorney For Drunk Driving Cases

A troubled police officer whose history of substance abuse led to his suspension in Washington Township has earned an arrest warrant in Pennsylvania after failing to appear for DUI trial in Pennsylvania.

In June, William McCarthy, 46, allegedly crashed into cars in two separate Pennsylvania towns while driving drunk.

He was ultimately arrested at a roadblock in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, but not before his vehicle had struck two occupied vehicles nearby.

He had continued to drive despite the airbag in his SUV having deployed.

He was charged with DUI, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and accidents involving damage, while police in Tamaqua were investigating an earlier case of an SUV driving the wrong way on a one-way-street, which ultimately sideswiped a parked car and then fled.

McCarthy was later charged in this case, too.

A year earlier, McCarthy had been arrested for DWI, and his wife said that he’d been a heavy drinker for years.

Though they had tried to get help for him, she said that there were family problems at the time that may have pushed him over the edge.

It’s not clear what happens to McCarthy next. Media attempts to contact his attorney went unanswered.

Drunk Driver Drives to New Jersey Police Station to Pick Up Drunk-Driving Boyfriend

August 11, 2017 by Matthew Reisig

A word of advice: If you’re drunk, it may be best if you don’t drive to your local police station to pick up a loved one who’s been arrested for DWI.

If it sounds like common sense, you should know that this exact scenario happened recently in Riverdale, New Jersey.

Riverdale police had arrested 41-year-old Stefano Mari, a resident of Mendham, and charged him with DWI after a witness reported a possibly intoxicated driver.

He was brought to the station, and after processing, contacted his girlfriend, Alexsandra Silvero, for a ride home.

Silvero, from West Orange, made her way to the police station, where officers began to suspect that she herself was intoxicated.

Eventually, they charged her with DWI as well.

For police, it must have been an easy day of catching drunk drivers, but for Mari and Silvero, it’s a giant headache with potentially far-reaching consequences.

If you’ve been arrested for DWI in New Jersey, you should know that an experienced DWI lawyer can make a big difference in your case.

Matthew Reisig has helped more than 1,040 New Jersey drivers avoid conviction on DWI and related charges.

Champion Bodybuilder Gains DWI at New Jersey’s Newark Airport As She Eats Cake

August 11, 2017 by Matthew Reisig

Port Authority Police had an odd experience in June when a driver swerved her way on a blown tire into Newark Airport.

They received multiple reports of a black Nissan Altima hitting curbs and guardrails – one of these collisions blew the tire on the car – that had just taken the exit to the airport around 10:30 that night.

By the time they caught up to it, the car was stopped at the airport and the driver, 31-year-old Dehabah R. Sylvester of Bloomfield, was chowing down on some cake.

Sylvester, who is the NPC Garden State bodybuilding champion, told police that she was pausing in her travels to eat and that she’d be on her way soon.

She appeared to be unaware of the flat tire or the fact that she’d been driving on the rim for quite a distance.

After a series of failed sobriety tests, Sylvester was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving.

A breath test revealed that her blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Her car was impounded after the DUI arrest.

A DWI charge is never a laughing matter, and can have serious personal and professional ramifications.
