Dennis Rodman Comes to NJ Rehab After DUI Arrest

June 19, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

After a California DUI arrest that could land him in prison, Basketball Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman has come to New Jersey to park himself in rehab for alcohol abuse.

The stakes in his case are high.

The former Chicago Bulls star was already on probation in California after a 2016 hit-and-run in which he was driving the wrong way.

The DUI means that a judge will have to determine whether to revoke the three-year probation sentence and force Rodman to serve out his time behind bars.

As he checked himself into Turning Point Rehabilitation Center in Paterson days after the arrest, Rodman’s agent, Darren Prince, told a reporter from USA Today, “It’s no secret Dennis has been struggling on and off with alcoholism the past 17 years. He’s been dealing with some very personal issues the past month and we’re going to get him the help he needs now.”

Addiction can have devastating consequences, including in the legal realm.

Matthew Reisig can help you- even if you’ve been convicted of multiple DUIs.

If you’ve been arrested for DWI in New Jersey, understand that an experienced DWI defense lawyer can make a big difference in the outcome of your case.

Drunk Snowplow Driver Facing Due Process After Repeat DWIs

June 15, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

A New Jersey snowplow driver with a history of DWIs made headlines in January when he crashed a Department of Transportation-owned snow removal vehicle into two cars along Route 23 in Pequannock.

Police determined that the driver, Roger Attieh, 36, a resident of Boonton, had a blood alcohol level that was nine times over the limit of .04% that’s allowed for those who hold commercial driver’s licenses.

It was not Attieh’s first, or even second, DWI.

In fact, this incident represents the fourth DWI that Attieh has been charged with, and his record includes earlier incidents from 2002 and 2007.

Because of multiple DUI convictions, he was forced to wait ten years before applying for and receiving a commercial driver’s license in 2017, and then he picked up his third DWI arrest in Denville during the month of December.

Surprisingly, state agencies appear to have complied with all federal and state laws in Attieh’s application process, checking his record going back a decade as required, but no further.

If he’s convicted of the December DWI, he will lose his commercial driver’s license for a year.

If he’s convicted of that incident and the January snowplow arrest, he’ll be permanently barred from holding a CDL in New Jersey.

DWI takes on greater significance when your livelihood is on the line.

“Catnip Cocktail” Leads to DWI Arrest in Wayne, NJ

June 11, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

For one Valhalla, New York, man, the “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION” label should have been a giveaway that what he was about to consume might be a bad choice before hitting the road.

Joseph Donofrio, 35, was spotted by cops in Wayne, New Jersey, as he made “extremely dangerous” lane changes on Route 23 southbound.

He was also speeding and driving recklessly when a patrol car pulled him over.

Donofrio told officers that he was going to a hospital, but police quickly found that Donofrio’s passenger, who was not identified in media accounts, was holding a bottle containing a prescription-only mood stabilizer for dogs and cats.

Donofrio admitted that he had been drinking the concoction, and as he demonstrated slurred speech and jerky hand movements, was unable to tell police how much he’d had or how long he’d been drinking his “Catnip Cocktail.”

Donofrio has been charged with DWI and inhaling toxic substances, as well as various traffic violations.

He was released to a sober adult and will face a judge soon.

If you’ve been charged with DWI in New Jersey, however weird the circumstances, an experienced New Jersey DWI defense lawyer can make a big difference for you.

Former Congressional Wannabe Charged With DWI After Crashing Into House

June 9, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

Voters in New Jersey’s fifth district might be breathing a sigh of relief about their electoral choices after a former candidate for its congressional seat was charged with drunk driving after crashing his pickup truck into a house in Newton.

Tod A. Theise, 55, of Hackettstown, was allegedly driving drunk with an open container of alcohol in his car around 2:00 in the afternoon on New Year’s Day when he lost control of the vehicle and it slammed into a house on High Street.

The crash reportedly caused serious damage to the house, which was ultimately determined to be an unsafe structure as a result.

Theise was charged with DWI, refusal, careless driving, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and released to a sober adult pending a court appearance.

In 2010, he mounted a campaign to unseat former Representative Scott Garrett, who later lost the 2016 race to current Representative Josh Gottheimer.

Theise has not sought elected office since that race, and now it seems likely that he’s out of the politics game for good.

If you’ve been charged with DWI in New Jersey, don’t go it alone.

Matthew Reisig has helped more than 1,040 New Jersey residents avoid conviction on DWI and related charges.

Drunk Driver Arrested After Driving Away from Walmart Crash

June 5, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

In Lacey Township, police didn’t have to go far to find an allegedly drunk driver who struck another vehicle when he turned his Ford F-150 into the Walmart parking lot on Route 9, striking the read of a Jeep Patriot that was waiting to leave the lot.

The driver of the F-150, 56-year-old Clifton Loeser, didn’t stop, but he also didn’t exactly make himself scarce.

According to police, Walmart employees themselves helped the Jeep’s driver to track down the Ford, which was parked in the lot while Loeser apparently did some shopping inside.

Lacey police arrived on the scene and found that Loeser was intoxicated at the time.

He was arrested and taken to police headquarters, where he was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, and reckless driving.

The driver of the Jeep appears to have been uninjured in the accident, and Loeser’s truck was impounded by the police under the terms of John’s Law.

Teen Sentenced to Prison After DWI Accident with Injuries

June 3, 2018 by Matthew Reisig

It’s well known that DWI, on its own, isn’t technically a criminal matter in New Jersey.

For a first offender who is pulled over and arrested, the consequences are mostly financial, with the long downside of a suspended driver’s license.

The equation changes considerably when driving drunk results in injuries to others, as one New Brunswick teen has now learned.

On May 12, Karla Mejia, then 17, caused a head-on collision that sent three people to the emergency room, two of them with serious injuries.

Two of the injured persons were passengers in Mejia’s car, the third being the driver of the vehicle she hit.

Earlier this fall, Mejia pleaded guilty in juvenile court to juvenile delinquency for conduct that, if committed by an adult, would constitute aggravated assault by auto.

At the end of December, Middlesex County Family Court imposed its sentence, ordering the now 18-year-old Mejia to serve two three-year sentences for the second degree crime of aggravated assault.

Drunk driving can change your life, and the lives of others, in dramatic ways.

If you’ve been arrested in a DWI incident, whether or not there were injuries, an experienced lawyer can help you avoid the worst consequences from our legal system.
